BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—On Monday, the Sarah Lawrence College Department of Athletics and Physical Education capped off the academic year with its Annual Athletic Banquet at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center. Representatives of all 14 SLC varsity programs were recognized for their achievements in athletics and academics.
Among those honored were SLC Athletes of the Year Brooklynn Moore (Oakland, Calif., Santa Catalina) and Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas, Aledo). Moore capped off her career by leading women's volleyball to a Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and also rowed on the women's crew team. Martinez left his mark on the men's swimming program by breaking 11 team records this season.
The department also named Moore and Nathan Thompson (Portland, Ore., Lake Oswego) as 2013 Alice Stone Ilchman Scholar Athletes. Moore combined her love of creative writing with her passion for law by studying poetry and international law; she will study law at Virginia Commonwealth University next year. Thompson is a three-year soccer and tennis player for the Gryphons, having spent his junior year abroad at University of Oxford. He spent his time at SLC studying the social sciences with an emphasis on politics.
The annual Newcomer Award was presented to Mary Kauffman (Marblehead, Mass., Marblehead) and Greg Smith (Tampa, Fla., Gaither) . Kauffman rowed with the crew team and was a stand-out runner for the women's cross country team, taking second place at the HVWAC Championship meet in October. Smith, a junior transfer from University of South Florida, made an immediate impact on the Gryphons' basketball program, leading the team in scoring and rebounding in his debut season.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) recognized Katie Voss (San Rafael, Calif., West Salem (Ore.)) as winner of the Gryphon Award in honor of school spirit and dedication to the student-athletes. Voss was honored for exemplifying the values of the NCAA Division III philosophy. She is a member of the women's tennis and women's swimming teams. She also served as the SAAC president.
Nine student-athletes were presented with the Varsity Award, recognizing seniors with at least three years of varsity participation. Honorees include Daniel Bark , Harper Hunt , Moore, Francis Oppong , Alexander Skillman , Thompson, Olivia Vache , Trevor Wallace and Taylor Zansberg .
In addition to department award selections, each team honored a Most Valuable Player (MVP) and a recipient of the Coaches Award, recognizing spirit, dedication and determination. SLC Equestrian also selected its annual Rasky Award recipient.
