GREENSBORO, N.C.—Sarah Lawrence College men's swimmer
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) made SLC history by representing the College at the 2016 NCAA Division III men's Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference at Greensboro Aquatics Center, Wednesday through Saturday. In the Gryphons' first year of eligibility, Martinez is SLC's first-ever competitor in an NCAA national championship.
DAY ONE - Wednesday, March 16Martinez began the meet by competing in the 200 yard individual medley. The Gryphon entered the event seeded No. 29 in the nation. On Wednesday, he swam a time of 1:52.69, good for 33rd place overall and just 0.41 behind his personal best.
DAY TWO - Thursday, March 17In his second event, Martinez broke through and qualified for the final heats of the 100 yard butterfly. The Thursday morning preliminaries saw Martinez place fourth in his heat in a time of 49.00, good for 13th place overall. Unfortunately, the senior Gryphon was disqualified in Thursday evening's consolation final.
DAY THREE - Friday, March 18On Friday, Martinez competed in his third and final event, the 200 yard butterfly. In the preliminaries, he placed second in his heat in a time of 1:49.35. The swim was good enough for 10th place, earning him a spot in the consolation final. On Friday evening, Martinez came from behind to win the consolation final, placing ninth overall. His final swim was 1:48.22, breaking his own SLC record. By virtue of his ninth-place finish, he earns the title of an NCAA Honorable Mention All-American.
Martinez scored nine points for the Gryphons, enough to place SLC in a tie for 46th overall.
