Busk, Garber and Kauffman Capture HVWAC Honors

NEW YORK—Three Sarah Lawrence College first-year student-athletes were recognized as weekly award winners by the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) for the period ending September 30, as announced by the league on Tuesday.

Molly Busk (Corbett, Ore., Corbett) was named Volleyball Rookie of the Week, Lane Garber (Los Altos, Calif., Los Altos) was tabbed Tennis Rookie of the Week, and for the second straight week, Mary Kauffman (Marblehead, Mass., Marblehead) was recognized as Cross Country Rookie of the Week.

Busk anchored the women's volleyball defense by accumulating 46 digs during the Gryphons' 4-0 week. The first-year libero recorded three matches with double-digit digs, setting a team-high for the season with 19 digs against Culinary. Busk eclipsed the 100-dig mark in only her 11th match of the season and leads the league in digs per set among players with at least 10 matches. She also contributed 17 services aces for the week, scoring critical momentum-building points for Sarah Lawrence.

On the tennis court, Garber posted a 2-0 week with a win at singles and doubles, helping the Gryphons secure a slim 5-4 win over York. She teamed with sophomore Mary Kairidi (Thessaloniki, Greece, Anatolia College) to post an 8-2 win in the No. 3 doubles position and went on to win her No. 5 singles match, 6-3, 6-3. Garber now stands at 3-1 on the year in singles play and 4-1 in doubles action.

Kauffman earned back-to-back Cross Country Rookie of the Week honors after being named HVWAC Runner of the Week on Sept. 22. The first-year harrier placed fifth overall and was the first HVWAC runner to cross the line at the Mount Saint Mary Invitational. In the final mile of the race, the lead pack had spread out considerably, and Kauffman was able to gain ground and secure the No. 5 spot with a time of 21:18. The move helped the Gryphons (195 points) secure a narrow advantage over SUNY Maritime (197 points) to take 6th place overall in the team standings.

In addition, Kairidi and volleyball player Zoë Spanbroek (Boca Raton, Fla., Saint Andrew's) were named to the HVWAC Honor Roll for the week.

Kairidi posted a 2-0 week with victories at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles to help the Gryphons clinch their  5-4 win over York. Kairidi remained undefeated in singles play by outlasting her opponent 7-5, 7-5 in a hard-fought match.

After earning Player of the Week honors last week, Spanbroek had another strong week, putting away a team-best 16 kills against New Rochelle and amassing 36 kills on a week where the Gryphons went 4-0. She became the first HVWAC player to eclipse the century mark this season, totaling 123 kills to date. Spanbroek also contributed 24 digs (114 total) with 13 aces (47 total) and now leads the league in both statistical categories.
