Sophomore Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J., Morristown) earns Student-Athlete of the Week honors after taking Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week accolades in the Gryphons' final week of competition in 2012.

As Sarah Lawrence's distance specialist, Bates picked up three wins in four individual races during the Gryphons' two meets of the week.

On Dec. 12, the sophomore began the week by breaking her own school record in the 1000 yard freestyle. She touched the wall in 12:13.99 to beat her previous best by nearly three seconds and earn the Gryphons' first race victory in a dual meet against William Patterson University. She also finished as runner-up in the 500 yard freestyle.

In dual meets against Bard College and Purchase College two days later, Bates again won the 1000 yard freestyle, and she picked up a dramatic come-from-behind victory in the 500 yard freestyle. She also contributed to the 200 yard medley relay squad in both meets.

To date, Bates has broken three program records this season, including the 500 yard freestyle, 1000 freestyle and 1650 freestyle. She has also been a member of four record-breaking relay squads.
