Athletics Philosophy Statement
The Department of Athletics and Physical Education at Sarah Lawrence College recognizes that participation on an intercollegiate athletic team is an invaluable part of the educational process. The philosophy of the department, like that of the College, emphasizes that genuine learning begins with the experience of each student-athlete. To achieve and promote the educational mission of the College, the department will:
- Assist student-athletes in attaining educational goals while improving their health and well-being;
- Assure that academic performance is, at a minimum, consistent with that of the general student body;
- Encourage participation by maximizing the number and variety of athletics opportunities for our students;
- Supports student-athletes in their pursuit of opportunities and passions outside of athletics;
- Provide equitable athletics opportunities for males and females and give equal emphasis to men's and women's sports;
- Provide experienced athletics staff with opportunities for professional development;
- Foster an environment of amateur competition that encourages cooperation, sportsmanship, and fair play;
