PURCHASE, N.Y.—After falling behind early, the Gryphons were unable to recover, as Sarah Lawrence College women's tennis fell to Purchase College, 7-2, in a non-conference match on Thursday.
In doubles action, Purchase (6-2) stole a commanding lead, sweeping all three pairs matches. For Sarah Lawrence (4-4), the occasion marked only the second match this season in which the Gryphons failed to score a doubles point.
The Panthers went on to clinch the match victory by cruising to wins in the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles matches.
Reigning Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Rookie of the Week
Sarah Fiordaliso (Amherst, N.Y., Sweet Home) picked up a 6-2 win in the opening set of her match in the No. 5 slot. In the accelerated super-tiebreak second set, Fiordaliso bested her Purchase opponent, 11-9, to win her match and put Sarah Lawrence on the scoreboard.
Though Purchase eventually won the No. 3 singles match, first-year Gryphon
Mary Kairidi (Thessaloniki, Greece, Anatolia College) forced a tiebreak in her opening set and won a super-tiebreak in the second set before winning the No. 6 match by retirement.
In the team's next match, Sarah Lawrence is slated to travel to HVWAC opponent St. Joseph's College Brooklyn on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
