BRONX, N.Y.—In the team's first match of the season, Sarah Lawrence College women's club soccer defeated Lehman College, 3-1, on Saturday.
In the 11th minute, Gryphon
Michaela Florio () broke away from midfield and put away the first goal of the match. Sarah Lawrence out-shot the Lightning by a 10-2 margin in the opening period and carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.
After the break, it took less than 10 minutes for Sarah Lawrence's
Kaylen Dornan (San Diego, Calif./High Tech High International) to net the second goal of the game. The sophomore collected a rebounded pass from teammate
Victoria Close and gave the Gryphons a 2-0 lead.
In the 59th minute, Lehman got on the scoreboard when Tiffany Altamirano circumnavigated Gryphon keeper
Saamerikes Anderson with her pass to Olusawayo Ayo, who converted the open-goal shot to narrow the gap to 2-1.
Though the re-energized Lightning continued to pound the Sarah Lawrence defense, the Gryphons broke up each subsequent attack. In the 82nd minute, Florio launched a 40-yard shot over the head of Lehman goalie Marleny Hernandez and scored an insurance goal for the Gryphons; Dornan assisted the score.
Anderson finished the game with two saves for Sarah Lawrence, while replacement keeper Close made five stops in more than 20 minutes of play. Lehman keeper Hernandez totaled five saves.
Sarah Lawrence will head to St. Joseph's College Brooklyn for its next match on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m.
