ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The bottom of the Gryphons' lineup held strong, but their efforts were insufficient, as Sarah Lawrence College women's tennis fell to host Bard College, 6-3, in a non-conference match at Stevenson Athletic Center Courts on Saturday.
With the loss, the Gryphons level out to 1-1 (1-0 HVWAC) on the season, while Bard remains a perfect 3-0 (0-0 Liberty) on the year.
In doubles action, Bard's No. 1 and No. 2 pairs made short work of Sarah Lawrence, as each match went the way of the Raptors, 8-1. In the No. 3 match, first-year players
Sarah Fiordaliso (Amherst, N.Y., Sweet Home) and
Lane Garber (Los Altos, Calif., Los Altos) held strong late in the match and finally broke open a lead to win their duel, 9-7.
With Bard in front, 2-1, the Raptors' top players, Jean Wong (Singapore/Anglo-Chinese) and Julia DeFabo (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) were nearly flawless in the top two matches. The Raptors clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles and tacked on an extra point with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4.
In the No. 6 match, sophomore Gryphon
Katie Voss (San Rafael, Calif., West Salem (Ore.)) stole a point back for the Gryphons, as she blanked her Raptor foe, 6-0, in the first set before cruising through the second set with a 6-1 win to stave off the singles sweep.
The final match on the courts was the hardest-fought, as Sarah Lawrence senior
Maddy Dessanti (Teaneck, N.J., Teaneck) picked up a 6-4 win in her opening set before matching her opponent, Bard's Beryl Taylor (Arlington, Mass./Arlington), at 6-6 in the second set. In the end, Dessanti bested her foe and picked up a 6-4, 7-6(7-3) win in her first match of the season.
Sarah Lawrence remains on the road on Sunday, as the Gryphons stop off in Newburgh, N.Y., to take on Mount Saint Mary College at 1 p.m.
