KEY MOMENTS
St. Joseph's controlled most of the action in the first half, but the stalwart Sarah Lawrence defense stymied every attack by the Golden Eagles. Rookie goalkeeper
Rachell Mosquera (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) made seven saves and fended off 15 shots in the period, and the scoreboard displayed a pair of goose eggs at halftime.
Mosquera and the Gryphons defense blockaded another flurry of 10 shots in the second half. Defenders
Eva Horstman (Edina, Minn./Edina),
Clarke Powell (Snellville, Ga./Shiloh), and
Emily Pressley (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) were pivotal in preserving the shutout through the first 90 minutes. Rookie
Jordynn Figueroa (Gresham, Ore./Gresham) served up a corner kick in the 53rd minute and senior
Paige Smith (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) made her season debut on the front line, yet the Gryphons were unable to capitalize on their own incursions. After regulation time expired, the game remained scoreless, and the teams went to overtime knotted, 0-0.
The Golden Eagles collected momentum throughout the extra time period. In the 98th minute, they finally broke through on a high, lofted shot that slipped over the goal line to clinch victory for St. Joseph's. The win solidified the Golden Eagles' berth in the Skyline tournament, while the loss eliminated the Gryphons' remaining postseason hopes.
