Strong Second Half Powers Gryphons to 5-2 Win Over Yeshiva on Senior Night

YONKERS, N.Y. – The Sarah Lawrence men's soccer team scored four second half goals to defeat Yeshiva 5-2 Thursday on Senior Night at Tibbetts Brook Park.

Prior to the start of the game, Varun Kelkar (Nagpur, India/Jenks), Alix Legrand (Damascus, Pa./Scranton Prep), Finn Macmillan (London, U.K./Bryanston), Colin Magerle (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep), Mehran Hicks (Hartsdale, N.Y./The Masters School) and Isar Wadhwa (New Delhi, India/The British School) were recognized for their hard work and dedication to the men's soccer program.

Camary Jonas (Kingston City, Jamaica/Martin Luther King Jr.) gave the Gryphons a 1-0 lead 2:40 into the contest, when he ripped the ball from his defender and chipped a shot over the goalkeeper's head and into the net.

Yeshiva equalized the contest in the 15th minute, when Eli Richards blasted a shot from 25 yards out. The Maccabees took the lead in the 38th minute, when Albert Dichy flicked in a header off a service from Alberto Benhamu.

The Gryphons' offensive outburst began in the 64th minute, when Jonas scored his second goal of the evening off a feed from Kelkar. Jonas scored again in the 70th minute, knocking in a header off a long cross from Kelkar, posting his second hat trick of the season.

Jonas is now the third Gryphons' men's soccer player to record multiple hat tricks, joining Mohamed Camara (Macenta, Guinea/New World) and Ishaan Pujari. Jonas finishes his rookie season with 13 goals, tying Pujari for the most goals in a single-season in program history. The rookie tallied 30 points, passing Pujari (27) for the most in a single campaign in team history.

Legrand extended the Gryphons' lead in the 74th minute, taking advantage of a Yeshiva foul in the box and converting the penalty attempt. George Scott (New York, N.Y./Bard HS Early College) found the back of the net for the first time in his career in the 82nd minute, scoring on a breakaway.

In his final game in goal, Hicks, the program leader in saves, tacked on nine more to finish his career with 226.

It was the Gryphons first-ever win over Yeshiva. With the victory, Sarah Lawrence set a team record for wins in a single-season and has now improved upon its win total in each of the last three seasons. Sarah Lawrence finishes the season with 91 points on 36 goals and 21 assists, all new team records. Winless in their first 37 Skyline conference games, the Gryphons finish the season with back-to-back victories in conference play.
