Women’s Soccer Finishes in Scoreless Draw With Manhattanville

YONKERS, N.Y. – A game that featured a combined 23 shot attempts and plenty of end-to-end action somehow did not include a goal, as Sarah Lawrence and Manhattanville played to a 0-0 stalemate on Thursday night at Tibbetts Brook Park. Sarah Lawrence is now 2-1-1 with three shutouts this season, while the Valiants move to 1-4-1.

RECAP
Both teams had golden opportunities to end the match in regulation in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Gryphons' goalkeeper Madison Mertsch made a critical stop in the 88th minute to preserve the clean sheet, while at the other end, River Pasquale ripped a shot just outside the 18-yard box in the 84th minute that sailed into the arms of the Valiants' netminder.

Perhaps Mertsch's best save of the night came in the 55th minute, when the sophomore made a diving stop to keep the ball from crossing the line following an open shot from Samira Davis. It was part of a flurry of shots from the Valiants, as Mertsch posted a season-best 11 saves.

The Gryphons' back line held strong against a solid Manhattanville front that returned its top four scorers from last year. The Valiants peppered Sarah Lawrence with shots, taking 19 attempts, but the defense answered the challenge, highlighted by a save off the line in the 30th minute.

Although Sarah Lawrence took just four shots in the match, the Gryphons offense did a good job of keeping possession and applying pressure to the back line of Manhattanville.

UP NEXT
Sarah Lawrence returns to action Saturday (Sept. 22), opening Skyline play with a contest against Mount Saint Vincent. Game time is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. at Tibbetts Brook Park.
