BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – For a second straight year, Sarah Lawrence Athletics has joined Saunders High School for a 'Pride on the Court' event in partnership with Nike's "BETRUE" campaign, an initiative with the goal of ending discrimination in sports.
On Friday, Jan. 18, at 9:30 a.m., Sarah Lawrence College will host a panel discussion at Campbell Sports Center, highlighted by guest speak Chris Mosier, an American transgender advocate and triathlete. Mosier competed on the Team USA sprint duathlon men's team in the 2016 World Championship, making him the first known trans athlete to join a U.S. national team. Mosier is the founder of transathlete.com, a resource for students, athletes, coaches, and administrators to find information about trans inclusion in athletics at all levels of play.
Sarah Lawrence and Saunders will show its support on the court on Saturday, Jan. 19, at Campbell Sports Center. What was once a doubleheader last year has blossomed into an all-day event, with the addition of two games. The Saunders Girls' team will play at 11 a.m., followed by the Sarah Lawrence women's team hosting Purchase College at 1 p.m. The Sarah Lawrence men will play the Panthers at 3 p.m., and the day will include with the Saunders' Boys team at 5 p.m.
Game admission is five dollars ($5), while other donations will be taken at the door. Concessions stands will be available in the Sports Center lobby, as the event is open to the public to attend.
All proceeds will be given to the Hudson Valley Chapter of the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education (GLSEN). Last year, over $800 was raised and presented to the organization.
BETRUE started in 2012 with a grassroots effort led by passionate Nike employees. To connect with the LGBTQ community in a personalized way, they made a few styles with NIKEiD in celebration of Pride month. United by a common mission to innovate for all athletes and provide equal access to sport, these employees developed a plan to bring BETRUE to more people. In the U.S., since 2012, Nike has provided approximately $2.5 million in financial and in-kind support to LGBTQ causes.
