Men's Volleyball Battles Five Sets With Mount Saint Vincent in Skyline Play

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. | The Sarah Lawrence College men's volleyball team battled through five sets Wednesday night at Campbell Sports Center against Skyline Conference foe College of Mount Saint Vincent. The visiting Dolphins came away with the victory by a narrow 3-2 margin (22-25, 25-22, 20-25, 26-24, 18-16).

Gryphons sophomore Felix Massey stood out once again, leading all players with 17 kills, five service aces and 33 digs on the night. Classmate Aaron Ashery added eight points (7 k, sa) to the SLC efforts, while senior Ithai Diakov collected a double-double with 22 assists and 11 digs.

Sarah Lawrence was down by as many as five points in the first set, before strong serving of Massey sent the hosts on a 12-0 run that eventually led to a 25-22 set triumph.

In set three, Ashery and Massey picked up two points apiece in a five-point spurt that pushed the hosts ahead for good in the frame, 9-4. MSV never pulled closer than three points, as the home side took a 2-1 advantage in the match.

Ashery put down a kill at 24-23 in the fourth stanza to give the Gryphons match point, before the Dolphins scored three straight to knot the match at 2-all and force a fifth and deciding frame.

In the finale, SLC found itself down by a 13-9 count, but gutted out a 5-1 run (including three kills by Massey) to tie things up at 14 apiece. Michael Yang and Massey then gave the hosts match point at 16-15 with back-to-back kills. From there, the Dolphins registered three straight points to take the match.

Head coach Sovanny Ebbesen's Gryphons are back in Skyline play this Saturday (Feb. 29), when they travel to Jersey City, N.J., for a tri-match with host New Jersey City University and the Dolphins of MSV. Sarah Lawrence will play the two opponents at 9 and 11 a.m., respectively.
