BRONXVILLE, N.Y. –
Lance De Leoz had a career-high 20 assists for the Sarah Lawrence College men's volleyball team as the Gryphons battled The City College of New York Beavers on Thursday night. CCNY defeated SLC 3-1.
The Gryphons came out hot, building a 7-0 lead in the first set.
Lukas Gates and
Nate Davis each had a kill during the run. CCNY ripped off a 9-5 run, narrowing the deficit to three. Up 14-11, Sarah Lawrence strung together a 3-0 run, going up by six. CCNY responded with two unanswered points, then SLC widened the gap with a 5-0 that featured two service aces from
Juan Paris. The Gryphons took the set 25-18.
The Gryphons stayed within three points early in the second set. Up 8-6, the Beavers recorded three consecutive points, stretching their lead to five. SLC retaliated with a 4-0 run, closing the gap to one point. The teams traded points from there, resulting in a 14-14 tie. Following a 3-0 rally from CCNY, SLC put up a 4-0 run, taking an 18-17 lead. CCNY ended the second set on 7-3 run, winning it 25-21.
The third set was evenly matched until the very end. The teams exchanged mini runs throughout the majority of the set, leading to a 17-17 draw. Two straight points from the Gryphons put them up 19-17. An 8-1 rally from the Beavers ended the set and put CCNY ahead 2-1.
The fourth set was similar to the third. The teams were neck-and-neck for most of the set, but CCNY pulled away towards the end. Up 17-16, the Beavers used a 4-0 run to create enough breathing room to take the final. CCNY won the set 25-19.
