YONKERS, N.Y. – History has been made and a ticket has been punched to the Skyline Conference tournament as the top seed, but the journey is not over as the Sarah Lawrence College women's soccer coasted past Yeshiva University 9-0.
The victory gives the Gryphons (13-3-2, 10-0-1 Skyline) 31 points in the Skyline Conference standings, which is just enough to overtake Mount St. Vincent for the regular-season championship and the No.1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
The victory not only gives the women's soccer team the regular-season conference title, but it also marks the first time in school history that any athletic team has won a regular-season crown regardless of sport or gender.
The win over Yeshiva (0-12, 0-11 Skyline) was not a surprise as the Maccabees have not won a Skyline Conference matchup since Oct. 25, 2015, when they defeated SLC to end the regular season.
A lot has changed in those seven years, with a lot of credit due to head coach
Maurizio Grillo, who took over the program in July of 2017.
Grillo has recruited players to fit his style of play and the young women that don the Sarah Lawrence jerseys have responded brilliantly to his coaching style.
Eight different Gryphons got into the scoring column, led by
Cora Colvin with two, while five players tallied assists including
Grace Carter with two.
Carter got the offensive barrage started at the 5:50 mark with her fifth goal of the season thanks to an assist from
Emma Floyd.
SLC added three goals over the next 15 minutes by
Viktoria Balbin (unassisted),
Cat Faville (assisted by Carter) and Colvin (assisted by Faville) to all but wrap the match up before 21:00 had elapsed off the game clock.
Sydney Olken notched her first goal of the season with help from an assist by
Lily Matalus to close out the first half scoring.
SLC tacked on four goals in the second half including tallies by
Samantha Lungren (assisted by Colvin), Colvin (assisted by Carter) as well as unassisted goals by
Natalia Chow and
Hailee Duckrey for the 9-0 win as the Gryphons dominated the pace of play and time of possession.
The Gryphons set a program single-match highs in shots (61) and shots on goal (29) as the Maccabees could not maintain control of the ball long enough to advance past midfield.
Despite taking the loss in goal, Yeshiva's Sophie Dubin did all she could do to keep the Gryphons from scoring more and should be applauded for her efforts between the pipes making 20 saves on the night.
SLC's
Bridgette Lee took the win playing the first half in goal before giving way to
Maya Pfeiffer for the second half as neither saw a shot come their way the entire match. Lee also took the field in the final minutes of the game as she showed she is more than just a goalie.
UP NEXT
Their next opponent has not been determined as the Gryphons have earned a bye into the semifinals of the Skyline Conference tournament, but the location has been as the Gryphons will play at home on the turf at Fleming Field.
