Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Chad Hensley

Historic Season finished for Women's Soccer

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The most accomplished season in the history of the Sarah Lawrence College women's soccer team has come to an unfortunate end in the NCAA Division III First Round in a 6-0 loss at MIT. This brings an end to a season which saw the team accrue numerous accolades and records. With a clean sweep of the Skyline All-Conference Awards, a first-ever Skyline Tournament Championship, and the first-ever NCAA Tournament Birth by a Sarah Lawrence team, the program found itself in the regional and national spotlight, well-deserved for a historic season.

The Engineers (15-5-2) are currently ranked 16th in the country and proved that they are one of the best teams in the country, limiting SLC to just two shots the entire game.

The Gryphons (14-4-3), who were hot off the heels of the aforementioned first Skyline Conference tournament title in program history, will lose three seniors, Cat Faville, Lainie Cadieux and Alyssa Barahona, off this season's team and will look to use today's result as motivation during the off season.

MIT jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead just 6:01 into the contest when Meagan Rowlett tapped in a pass from Karenna Goff to start the Engineers' offense. Rowlett then gave the Engineers all the insurance they would need just 13 minutes later when she scored her 12th goal of the season, her second of the match, to give MIT a 2-0 lead that would remain heading into the half.

Bridgette Lee, who would end up with a single season save percentage of 76.3, did all she could in net yet the Gryphons found themselves at a two-goal disadvantage at the half.

The Sarah Lawrence offense was held in check, as Viktoria Balbin and Cora Colvin were credited with the only two shots taken for the Gryphons during the game.

MIT tacked on four goals in the final seventeen minutes of the game to eventually claim the victory by a 6-0 margin. The Engineers owned a 28-2 shots advantage as well as 13 corner kicks to zero for the Gryphons. MIT will advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, which will take place tomorrow when the Engineers take on Williams College at 1:00 p.m. in Cambridge.
