BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - On Wednesday evening, the Sarah Lawrence women's soccer team will host the United States Merchant Marine Academy for a Skyline semifinal matchup at Fleming Field in Yonkers, N.Y.
The Gryphons and Mariners met earlier this season in Kings Point, N.Y. where the Gryphons escaped with a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to a highlight-reel goal by reigning Skyline offensive player of the year Cora Colvin.
The Mariners are in their second season as a program and have already earned a Skyline tournament victory this season, a 1-0 defeat of St. Joseph's Long Island, the tournament's #4 seed. USMMA narrowly missed the conference tournament last season, after obtaining a 9-6-1 overall mark and a 4-6-1 mark in Skyline play, finishing in seventh-place. This season they finished 7-5-3 overall, with an improved 6-2-3 mark in conference play, earning the conference's fifth seed. The Mariners have relied on a stifling defense, holding opponents to just 12 goals in 15 games.
The Gryphons have repeated as the conference's number one seed after finishing the season undefeated for the second straight year. The team owns a 9-0-2 conference record with an overall mark of 12-4-3, after a tough non-conference schedule to start the season. The Gryphons have also relied on a strong defense, shutting out eight Skyline opponents, including their last six games of the season. They have outscored Skyline opponents 42-5 this season, while out-shooting their opponents 318-190 overall.
