Gryphons Wrap up 2023 Season with Skyline Semifinal Matchup

YONKERS, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's soccer team fell to USMMA 2-1 on Wednesday night as the Gryphons suffered their first Skyline loss since 2021. The Gryphons took an early lead before the Mariners scored to tie the contest two minutes later and a second-half score secured a victory for the visitors.

Top Performers
  • Cora Colvin opened the scoring with a goal over the keeper's head 21st minute
  • USMMA's Morgan Mitchell scored two minutes later with the equalizer
  • Ainsley Carlon scored the game-winner in the 65th minute
  • Sarah Lawrence goalkeeper Bridgette Lee totaled eight saves

How it Happened

The Gryphons got pressure early, with Viktoria Balbin registering the game's first shot in the 6th minute, forcing USMMA's Ronnie Florek to make a save in the lower left corner. Morgan Mitchell would register two of her team-high four shots in the following few minutes, but neither would threaten the Gryphons as they would both be wide of the net. Colvin would register her first shot in the 16th minute, but it would be wide left. USMMA's Emma Cox put a shot on goal as she attempted to get it over Lee, but the keeper would make the save to keep the score knotted up at 0-0. Two minutes later it would be Colvin to attempt a shot in the top the net, getting the ball over Florek's head for the opening score, a 1-0 advantage for the top-seeded Gryphons. The Mariners would storm back, as they would get a corner kick just 20 seconds later and after another shot by Balbin, the Mariners would convert as Morgan Mitchell's shot bounced off the left post and rolled backwards into the goal to tie the contest and one goal apiece. For the next 20 minutes the SLC defense stepped up, allowing just one shot, a wide-left look by USMMA's Faith Sammons in the 26th minute. The Gryphons would get five shots in the final six minutes, but none would be on goal as the two teams entered the half in a 1-1 tie.

The start of the second half would be a continued solid showing from the USMMA defense, limiting the Gryphons to one shot in the first 10 minutes of the period. The USMMA offense would begin to pressure the SLC backline, as shots by Sammons, Carlon and Alexx Forman all were saved by Lee in the span of 180 seconds before Carlon found the bottom left corner of the net to give the Mariners the eventual game-winning lead. The Gryphons would get looks at goal from Balbin and Ava Warren in the final stretch of play, but saves by Florek would keep the hosts off the board and allow the Mariners to advance to their first-ever Skyline women's soccer championship game.
