By the Numbers
How it Happened
The first set was evenly matched as both teams capitalized on the mistakes of the other. The Raptors were able to maintain a lead thanks to two separate four-point runs that prevented the Gryphons from gaining any substantial momentum. A kill from
Ralph Calle-Schulz would bring the Gryphons within five late in the set but an attack error followed by two Bard service aces would give the Raptors the set.
The second set was the closest of the day, as the Gryphons jumped out to an early 8-3 lead on the back of five points off errors by Bard attempting to return
Felix Massey serves. The Raptors would slowly battle back and take a 19-16 lead later in the set, but the Gryphons would take five of the next six points to take a late 21-20 lead in the set. It would be on the back of an Angel Obergh kill that the Raptors would take their turn winning five of six points to secure the set and take a commanding 2-0 lead.
The final set of the match would be highlighted by a six-point scoring streak by the Raptors early in the set and six of seven points to close out the set and consequently the game. Despite a late kill by Massey it was not enough to hold off Bard from securing the match victory.
