Men's Volleyball 2023 Season Recap

8.3.23

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team finished out their 2023 campaign showing ample signs of improvement. The young squad displayed this improvement first-hand as they took St. Joseph's Brooklyn and Yeshiva to the fifth set in back-to-back matche late in the month of March. The team also took the campus by storm, consistently bringing a crowd to the Campbell Sports Center for their home matches.

Top Performers
  • Senior Felix Massey led the team offensively, pacing the team in kills and finishing fourth in the conference in kills per set
  • Juan Paris and Massey finished the season third and fourth in the conference in service aces per set, as Paris totaled 34 total service aces on the season while Massey was right behind with 32
  • Libero Lukas Gates totaled 244 digs, averaging 3.25 per set which was good for fourth in the conference

The Gryphons would continue to improve throughout the season as the team's chemistry and overall confidence would noticeably grow with each match. With Massey leading the offensive attack and Gates, Paris and senior Lance De Leoz helping solidify the team around their offensive leader, the team would peak in late March, as a Tuesday night home matchup against St. Joseph's of Brooklyn would see the Gryphons take control of a match for the first time all season. The Gryphons would fall in set one, but would rally back to win a close second set and claim a one-set lead with a 25-19 victory in the third frame. Despite falling in the final two sets, the Gryphons showed flashes of dominance, securing 17 service aces throughout the match compared to just five by the Bears. The team would then return to the Campbell Sports Center two days later to host Yeshiva University, this time taking the first set by a score of 28-26. After a 25-20 victory in the second set, the Gryphons and Maccabees would battle fiercely, with the visitors eventually claiming an extremely close 3-2 victory. With new head coach John Carroll taking over the program, the Gryphons will look to improve in 2024 with many key contributors returning, including the aforementioned Gates. Juniors Ralph Calle-Schulz and Nicholas Fajardo will help bring added experience and leadership to the team while rising sophomores Aidan Roney and Derek Hickman will continue to build off their drastic improvements from this past season.
