20-Kill Performance by Davis Leads Gryphons in Home Opener

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team opened their 2024 home schedule against CCNY on Wednesday night, falling to the Beavers 3-0 despite multiple close sets, including a 27-25 start to the match.

Top Performers
  • Nate Davis led all players with 20 kills and four service aces while also totaling a match-high nine digs
  • Kian Silva totaled 23 assists, adding in two kills and three digs
  • Aidan Roney earned a solo block and a block assist while adding two kills offensively

How it Happened

The Gryphons jumped ahead early to the tune of a 6-1 lead, but after claiming a 9-2 advantage the Beavers would make their run, scoring five of the next six points to keep the set close. The Gryphons would remain ahead, using a string of kills by Davis, Silva and Roney to maintain their lead, but after reaching 22-18, the Beavers would surge again, taking four consecutive points to tie the set. After alternating points to get to 24-24, the Gryphons took set point after a Nikos Diaz kill, but CCNY's Reng Chen would answer and two SLC errors would close out the set and give the Beavers an early advantage.

The second set was controlled by the Beavers after a five-point swing gave them a 9-5 lead early. The Gryphons would remain within striking distance but another run later in the set to push the score to 21-11 allowed them to take a two-set advantage despite late kills by Davis and Ralph Calle-Schulz.

The third set was another close contest, with the Beavers maintaining a slight lead throughout the early stages before a four-point run highlighted by two of Davis's four service aces would allow the Gryphons to tie the set at 11 points apiece. Neither team would be able to extend their lead to more than one point, with five lead changes before CCNY managed to reach match point with a 24-22 lead. Another timely kill by Davis extended the match, but a CCNY kill on the ensuing rally would give the Beavers a 25-23 set victory and an overall 3-0 mark in the match.
