Balbin's Second-Half Goals Proves to be Game-Winner as Women's Soccer takes down SJLI

YONKERS, N.Y. – The Sarah Lawrence women's soccer team earned a 3-1 victory over St. Joseph's Long Island on October 23, 2024, in a pivotal Skyline Conference matchup. The Gryphons opened the scoring late in the first half and held off a late push from the Golden Eagles to secure the win.

Notable Performers
  • Katey Beaver scored the opening goal for SLC in the 42nd minute, while adding an assist on the final score of the night
  • Viktoria Balbin scored the game-winner early in the second half, striking from in front of the goal in the 59th minute
  • Hannah Chaffin sealed the game with a score in the 89th minute thanks to a pass ahead from Beaver

How It Happened

After 41 minutes of scoreless soccer, Sarah Lawrence took a 1-0 lead late in the first half when Beaver scored an unassisted goal in the 42nd minute from long range, marking her ninth goal of the season as the sophomore put the ball over the SJLI keeper. The Gryphons maintained their defensive shape for the final three minutes and entered halftime with a narrow lead. In the second half, Balbin doubled the Gryphons' advantage in the 59th minute with an unassisted goal, as she won a ball in front of the keeper and put it in with her right foot for her fifth score of the season. St. Joseph's (L.I.) pulled one back in the 71st minute through Alyssa Schimmenti, cutting Sarah Lawrence's lead to 2-1 and threatening to tie the game at two goals apiece. Despite the shift in momentum, the Gryphons responded with another goal in the 88th minute when Chaffin found the back of the net from just outside the box, assisted by Beaver, sealing the match at 3-1 and vaulting the Gryphons into first place in the conference.
