Gryphons Push Bulldogs to Four Sets in Non-Conference Matchup

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team took the Brooklyn College Bulldogs to four sets on Sunday afternoon, including two sets that saw the losing team at 23 or more points. The Gryphons fell by scores of 13-25, 26-24, 19-25 and 23-25.

Top Performers
  • Nate Davis totaled 15 kills and eight digs to lead the Gryphons in both categories
  • Nicholas Fajardo led the team with 20 assists, adding fours digs and a kill
  • Nikos Diaz totaled seven digs and added four assists for SLC

How it Happened

The Bulldogs asserted themselves early, going on a four-point run to open the match on the back of three straight David Lema service aces. The Bulldogs remained ahead and another run by the visitors secured the set victory, this time once again on the back of a string of service aces. A late set block by Jozef Kandrac and an ensuing service ace by Jason Ciron allowed the Gryphons to delay the eventual 25-13 set victory.

The Bulldogs once ahead got out to an early-set lead, getting ahead 11-6 before a six-point run by the Gryphons headlined by a Nate Davis kill and a block by Ralph Calle-Schulz brought the Gryphons into a lead. The Bulldogs would methodically climb back ahead despite kills by Davis, Fajardo and Aidan Roney, and the visitors eventually reached set point with a chance to take a two-set lead. The Gryphons then took four straight points on a string of serves by Roney and took a 26-24 set victory.

The third set was another back-and-forth affair to start, with the two teams finding themselves knotted at 10 points apiece. The Bulldogs then took the following four points on a string of SLC errors to claim a 14-10 lead that they would hold throughout the remainder of the set, sealing it with an Aaron Siu kill.

The fourth and final set was reminiscent of the second, with the two teams tied early before a run by the Gryphons gave the hosts a three-point advantage and threatened to tie the match at two sets apiece. The Gryphons would momentarily hold their lead but an offensive surge would push the Bulldogs into pole position, eventually claiming match point and securing the match victory with a kill by Tommy Min.
