How it Happened

Match 1: Dolphins defeat Gryphons 3-1 (25-15, 16-25, 25-23, 25-21)

An early run by the Dolphins put them in control of the set, taking a 7-1 lead and holding the lead for the remainder of the set to take a 25-15 victory. The Gryphons got revenge in the second set, but it did not happen the same way the Dolphins found success. After being tied at 6-6, the Gryphons took four straight points thanks to kills by both Derek Hickman and the aforementioned Davis. Another six-point run a few rallies later gave SLC a commanding 17-9 lead and that run featured two Lukas Gates service aces and a kill by Aidan Roney. The Dolphins had a second life late in the set, but the Gryphons took three straight points to tie the match, with a Kian Silva block sealing the 25-16 set victory for SLC. The third set remained close throughout, with neither team getting out to a three-or-more point lead until a four-point SLC run gave the Gryphons a 16-12 lead. The Gryphons held a lead as the Dolphins inched their way closer, with an eventual SLC lead reaching 23-19 and threatening to take a 2-1 lead. The Dolphins then strung together two kills and a block to make the score 23-22 and two SLC errors to boot allowed UMSV to complete the comeback effort and take a 2-1 match lead. The two teams once again remained close in the fourth set, with a 14-14 tie partway through the set. The Dolphins would take the next four points and hold their lead throughout the end of the set, despite a Jozef Kandrac service ace that delayed the victory. A kill by UMSV's James Rose sealed the victory for the Dolphins three sets to one.

Match 2: Gothic Knights defeat Gryphons 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-16)

The Gothic Knights were the best team throughout the day, winning in three straight sets in both matches while holding opponents under 17 points in all six sets. SLC's 16-point effort in the third set of their match was the best showing against NJCU all day. The Gryphons fell behind 9-3 in the first set as three different Gothic Knights registered kills in a 6-0 run that gave them the early advantage. The Gryphons rallied to keep the set close, but after an NJCU attack error to narrow the gap to three points at 16-13, the visitors would not lose another point, taking nine straight points and using an Alex Casais service ace to seal the first set. The visitors dominated again in the second set, not using any major scoring runs, but responding to every SLC score to stay ahead. The Gothic Knights took six of the last eight points, with the two in favor of SLC coming on NJCU service errors. The third set was full of runs by both teams, but the biggest run would be a six-point swing turning a 10-10 set into a 16-10 advantage for NJCU. The teams would trade points from that point on until a Leandro Perez kill sealed the match and gave the visitors their second victory of the day.
