Gryphons Celebrate Senior Day and Split Tri-Match in Bronxville

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team wrapped up their 2024 season with a busy day, honoring four 2024 graduates before splitting the day's matches and celebrating star hitter Nate Davis's 1,000th career kill, a program record.

Top Performers
  • The aforementioned Davis totaled 40 kills on the day, adding 16 digs and four total blocks
  • Ralph Calle-Schulz totaled 10 kills and registered a service ace
  • Kian Silva totaled 53 assists while adding five kills
  • Senior Jason Ciron totaled 19 digs for the Gryphons

Match 1: SLC def. OW 3-0

The Gryphons controlled much of the day's first match, taking six of the first seven points thanks to kills from Davis, Derek Hickman and Silva. A double block by Silva and Aidan Roney capped the opening run and allowed the Gryphons to carry a lead throughout the set. The Panthers rallied to tie the set at nine points apiece, but a 5-1 run by SLC a few rallies later would give the Gryphons a four-point advantage halfway through the set. The Gryphons would remain ahead and a service ace by Calle-Schulz would cap off a 25-18 first-set victory for the hosts.

The second set would be tied at seven after a close opening sequence, but a 7-1 run by the Gryphons would open up a 14-8 lead after a Davis/Roney block and kills by Davis and Hickman. After trading points briefly, another run by the Gryphons would put them up 19-11 and in line to take a two-set lead. The hosts took the set's final four points and sealed the set with a Hickman solo block.

The third and final set saw the Gryphons get ahead to the tune of a 4-1 lead, but a mid-set run by the Panthers would bring the score to 10-9 in favor of the hosts. The Gryphons would eventually get a pair of kills from Calle-Schulz and another by Roney to take six straight points and build a 20-13 lead. The Panthers took five straight points on a trio of SLC errors to close the gap to two points, but SLC took five of the match's final six points and sealed their Skyline victory with a Nicholas Fajardo service ace.

Match 2: MVL def. SLC 3-0

The first set was a back-and-forth affair, with an early 4-2 Manhattanville lead putting the visitors ahead. The Valiants would hold their lead despite multiple kills from Davis and Silva, but back-to-back Manhattanville errors allowed the Gryphons to pull within one by a tally of 11-10. Three straight kills by the Valiants would re-assert their lead, but the Gryphons would not go down quietly. A Hickman/Davis double block followed by a pair of kills from Davis would fuel a 4-point swing that would tie the set at 14. The Valiants would turn on the burners following the short SLC run, taking the next three points and seven of the next nine to build up a 21-16 lead. Another Davis kill would tease a resurgence, but the Valiants would stay ahead and a Joe Gandarillas kill would seal a 25-21 first-set victory.

SLC would jump ahead 5-2 after a Hickman service ace and a pair of kills from Davis. A kill and back-to-back service aces by the visitors would tie the set. The teams would trade points as they remained knotted up at 13 following a kill by Roney. Three of the next four points would go to the Valiants, but SLC would capitalize on two consecutive Manhattanville errors to tie the set once again, this time at 16. Kills would be traded and after a pair of scores by the Valiants, a Manhattanville error and a Calle-Schulz/Hickman block, another tie prevailed, this time at 19 points apiece. The Valiants would take over from there, taking the next five points to reach set point with a 24-19 advantage. A Davis kill and setting error by the visitors would delay the end of the set, but a Wilton Martinez kill would secure the second-set victory for the Valiants.

The third and final set of the match was a back-and-forth affair, with the Gryphons getting ahead 7-3 as Davis put up five kills in the early run, including back-to-back-to-back kills amidst a six-point swing. A Fajardo block, Davis kill and Manhattanville error would give the Gryphons another brief scoring run, bringing their lead up to six as they led 12-6. Four straight points would go to the Valiants and six of the next seven, reducing the lead to 13-12. Another Davis kill would stop the bleeding, but after trading points, the Valiants would embark on a seven-point run to regain a lead by a score of 20-15. The Valiants would remain in control throughout the remainder of the set, with Davis registering a pair of kills and coming through with a solo block, but it would not be enough as Manhattanville held on for a 25-21 third-set victory.
