NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's tennis team fell to Mount Saint Mary by a score of 2-5 on Saturday afternoon. The Gryphons earned a doubles victory and pair of wins in the top two flights of singles play, but could not return to Bronxville victorious. The team will look for their first conference victory next weekend as they host both Purchase College and Farmingdale State College.
In doubles action, the Gryphons secured a victory at the top, but lost the doubles point overall. At #1 doubles,
Neomi Spellman and
Josephine Jackson came out strong, defeating MSMC's Victoria Valencia and Autumn Strobach 6-2. Unfortunately, the Knights took a victory att #2 doubles, as
Kyra Johnsen and
Caroline He fell to Angelina Mainiero and Paige Shrimpton 4-6. SLC's
Rebecca Stearns and
Melody Diaz fell to Megan Mann and Peyton Curley 1-6 at #3 doubles to give the Knights the doubles point.
In singles play, Sarah Lawrence had two standout performances at the top of the lineup. At #1 singles, Spellman carried her momentum from doubles, winning a tightly contested match against Victoria Valencia. Spellman took the first set 6-3 and battled through a tense second set, eventually closing it out 7-5. Josephine Jackson also shined at #2 singles, where she dominated Autumn Strobach, winning convincingly in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 and continuing her strong rookie season. Despite strong performances from Spellman and Jackson, the Gryphons struggled in the remaining singles matchups. At #3 singles, Kyra Johnsen started slowly, losing the first set 1-6 to Angelina Mainiero. She made a valiant effort in the second set, pushing it to a tiebreak, but ultimately fell short 6-7 (5-7). Caroline He fought hard at #4 singles but lost a close first set 5-7 to Megan Mann before dropping the second set 1-6. Rebecca Stearns at #5 singles and Hiba Raiz at #6 singles both had difficult outings, with Stearns losing 2-6, 0-6 to Paige Shrimpton and Raiz falling 1-6, 1-6 to Peyton Curley.

The Gryphons (1-5, Skyline 0-2) will return to action next weekend as they host Purchase College on Saturday, September 28th before welcoming Farmingdale State to Bronxville on Sunday, September 29th. Both matches will begin at noon on the campus of Sarah Lawrence.
