Vaca makes 11 Saves as Gryphons Travel to New Jersey to Take on Kean

UNION, N.J. - The Sarah Lawrence women's soccer team fell to the Kean University Cougars 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Gryphons held the hosts to one goal in the first half before allowing the second and final score in the second half.

Notable Performers
  • First Year goalkeeper Bella Vaca made 11 saves for SLC, facing 13 total shots on goal
  • Hannah Chaffin led SLC with two shots, putting both on goal for the Gryphons
  • Sydney Atherley played all 90 minutes for SLC, keeping a strong backline as reigning Skyline defensive player of the year Daniela Perez played just the first half

How it Happened

The Gryphons started the game by applying offensive pressure, registering four shots in the first eight minutes of play. The Cougars joined in on the fun shortly thereafter, putting three shots on goal in the next stretch of play and testing Vaca in goal. In the 27th minute, Courtney Irwin would take a pass from Kiera Quinn and navigate the SLC defense to open the scoring and give the hosts a one-goal advantage. The Cougars tested Vaca again before the half, but she would answer the call and keep the score at 1-0 entering the intermission. The second half saw the Cougars keep the pressure on the SLC defense, forcing Vaca to make a total of six second-half saves to keep the Gryphons in the game. Despite the first year's stellar play in goal, the Cougars broke through the SLC defense a second time in the 76th minute as Quinn registered her second assist of the day, finding Ella Petrosh for a score to give the hosts some insurance in the final 15 minutes of play.
