Chaffin Ties Career Goals Record as Women's Soccer Draws with USMMA

KING'S POINT, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence Women's Soccer Team played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon against the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners. Senior Hannah Chaffin scored her 27th career goal, tying Cora Colvin's program record. Chaffin and the Gryphons will wrap up their 2025 regular season on Wednesday against Yeshiva before the first round of the Skyline Conference Tournament on Saturday, November 1st.

Notable Performers
  • Chaffin's equalizer in the 22nd minute tied the game after an early USMMA score
  • Viktoria Balbin pressured the Merchant Marine defense, with three shots on goal
  • Bella Vaca played all 90 minutes in goal for SLC, making one save
How it Happened

The Gryphons applied some pressure early, with a trio of shots in the first 20 minutes. Junior Katey Beaver forced a save in the 15th minute, but despite the early opportunities for the visitors, it would be the Mariners to score first. Shortly after Beaver's aforementioned attempt, Emma Cox would find teammate Lillia Miller, who ricocheted the ball off the crossbar and into the net, giving the hosts a one-goal advantage. As play resumed, Chaffin had a look at the goal but would be blocked, only to return to the box a few minutes later to tie the game up. Shortly after a throw-in, Emma Mangan would put a ball into the box ahead of Chaffin, who would shoot from the top of the box and place the ball in the top left corner of the goal, past the leaping USMMA keeper. Both teams would put one more shot on goal in the later stages of the first half, but saves from both keepers kept the game knotted up at one score each. The Gryphons put six shots on goal in the second half, but USMMA keeper Eva Fields kept the Gryphons off the board at each opportunity. The Gryphons kept the hosts from getting any looks at the goal in the second half, despite a barrage of shots in the final five minutes by the Mariners. Balbin would get a shot on goal in the 89th minute, but the final save of the day for Fields would wrap up the game and send both teams home with a point.
