Men's Volleyball Totals Eight Blocks against Manhattanville in Skyline Showdown

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team took their first Skyline loss of the 2025 season on Wednesday night, falling to the Valiants of Manhattanville three sets to none. The second and third sets of the match were both nail-biters that went the way of the Valiants by scores of 25-22 and 25-23.

Notable Performers
  • Nate Davis put up a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs
  • Lucas Buckley had four aces, five block assists and five digs
  • Alex Xie totaled 17 assists, seven digs and a pair each of aces and block assists
  • Nathan Dreger put up five kills, and four block assists in the loss

How it Happened

The Valiants got going early, with an early 11-4 lead fueled by four aces. The Gryphons would answer with four straight points thanks to a pair of aces by Buckley and a kill from Davis. Unfortunately, the visitors would respond with a 4-1 run to reclaim a six-point advantage. The Gryphons got kills from Ralph Calle-Schulz, Davis and Buckley in the final stretch of the set, but the Valiants held on for a 25-15 first-set victory.

The second set started as the first ended, with a strong Manhattanville sequence to open the set. The Valiants took a 4-0 lead before SLC's first years stepped up to respond. Xie found Dreger for a kill to start the run while an ace by Xie and a Dreger-Buckley block helped tie the match at 4-4. The Valiants responded with a kill to stop the streak, but Dreger answered with a kill of his own and Davis joined in to give SLC a 7-5 advantage after a Manhattanville error. The Valiants fought back to claim a 9-8 lead before two SLC blocks by Aiden Roney and Buckley/Xie bookended a 3-0 run that put the hosts back on top. A pair of aces fueled a 3-0 run in response by the Valiants and the set would be tied at 11, 12, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21 points apiece before the Valiants took five of the final six points to claim a 25-22 second-set win.

The third set was much like the second, with a back-and-forth affair seeing a total of nine ties before the Valiants sealed the match. Buckley, Davis and Dreger all registered kills early to keep the Gryphons neck-and-neck with the Valiants before Buckley and Dreger combined efforts for a block that gave SLC an 8-7 advantage. Buckley added his final two aces of the night and another kill to put the Gryphons up 13-11, but a four-point swing in favor of the Valiants gave them the advantage heading into the second half of the set. Xie would find Dreger for a kill before earning another ace and a block alongside Roney down the stretch, but even a late Calle-Schulz kill would not stop the Valiants from clinching the match.
