Men's Volleyball Secures Postseason Berth with Win over Dolphins

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team rebounded from a first-set loss to take down the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent (UMSV) on the road and secure the sixth seed in the Skyline Conference Championship starting next Tuesday, April 8th.

Notable Performers
  • Nate Davis led all players with 26 kills, adding in 10 digs for a double-double
  • Alex Xie had 42 assists for the Gryphons in addition to five digs of his own
  • Jackson Perhaes racked up nine digs, adding in five kills and two aces

How it Happened

The Gryphons started the first set with a 7-1 lead, thanks to kills from Davis, Xie and Lucas Buckley. The visitors remained ahead throughout the set, taking a 21-15 lead after a Nathan Dreger kill. The Dolphins would come alive despite the six-point disadvantage, taking five straight points to bring the set within a point before a Davis kill stopped the bleeding for SLC. It would not be enough, as the hosts took the next five points as well, with a comeback 25-22 victory giving them a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set saw the Gryphons get out to a small lead, but the Dolphins stayed close by. A 5-0 run highlighted by a Davis/Dreger block put the Gryphons up 15-8, with the lead holding throughout the remainder of the set before a kill by Davis gave SLC 25 points and tied the match at one set apiece. The third set started with a 3-2 advantage for the Gryphons before an 8-2 run fueled by a pair of Dreger aces put them up 11-4. The team would remain ahead for the remainder of the set, cruising to a 25-15 victory. The fourth and final set was a back-and-forth affair, but the Gryphons held a slight lead throughout. After back-to-back kills by Buckley and Davis to put the visitors up 21-16, the Dolphins answered with a kill of their own, but four straight points would secure the win for the Gryphons, as a Perhaes kill sent the team to the postseason.
