Men's Volleyball Wraps up Impressive Season with Postseason Matchup against Roadrunners

MAHWAH, N.J. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team wrapped up their historic 2025 season with a trip to Ramapo College for a first round matchup against the third-seeded Roadrunners. The Gryphons entered the match as the sixth seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament, appearing in their first postseason match since 2022. The Gryphons fell to the Roadrunners in three sets as their season came to an end.

Notable Performers
  • All-Conference hitter Nate Davis wrapped up his historic SLC career with a 19-kill performance
  • First-year setter Alex Xie registered 19 assists, a pair of kills and a huge solo block

How it Happened

The Gryphons were unable to get much going offensively in the first set, with four kills from Davis, a solo block by Nathan Dreger and an unassisted kill by Xie in the waning moments marking the only SLC scores. Six Ramapo service errors helped keep the Gryphons from entering too long of a drought, but the Roadrunners made up for it with 10 kills to take a 25-14 first-set victory. The hosts then got out to a fast start in the second set, jumping ahead 9-4 after four kills from all-conference outside hitter Reece Kirchofer. Davis stopped the bleeding with a kill to make it 9-4 before fellow senior Ralph Calle-Schulz joined him to bring SLC closer. The Gryphons managed to close the gap to two points after a few Ramapo errors, trailing 9-11 midway through the set. Kills from Davis and Dreger kept the Roadrunners from pulling away before a 3-0 SLC run, highlighted by another well-timed kill from Xie, tied the set at 14 points apiece. The Roadrunners took the next point, but Davis once again answered the call to keep the Gryphons in the set. Another Ramapo point would return the lead to the hosts, but this time Lucas Buckley stepped up to get on the board and tie the set up once again. A pair of kills by Ramapo's Brady Cascone and a double-block by the hosts would swing momentum in favor of the roadrunners, but Davis put up another two kills to keep the Gryphons in it, hoping to tie the match at one set apiece. Despite two more kills from Dreger, the Roadrunners would use a trio of scores by Kirchofer and a pair of SLC errors to take the set, along with a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

The third and final set was similar to the second at the onset, with an 8-3 Ramapo lead forcing the Gryphons to work their way back into the set. Six Davis kills in the first half of the set would pair with Ramapo errors to pull the Gryphons within three at 12-15, but a three-point swing for the Roadrunners erased SLC's momentum. Luckily, the hosts responded with errors of their own, coupling with a Davis kill to swing three points back in favor of SLC, returning the lead to just three points. After a Ramapo kill and a Davis response, another error by the hosts closed the gap to two, with a 19-17 Ramapo lead allowing the Gryphons back into the set. After an SLC error, Xie came up with a huge solo block to keep the Gryphons in contention, but the final five points of the night went to the hosts, who took a 25-18 third-set victory and advanced to Thursday's semifinal round at NJCU.

The Gryphons round out their 2025 campaign after shattering the program's record for single-season wins, with 13 victories compared to eight in 2022. The team also racked up eight conference wins, besting the previous high mark of six from the same 2022 season. The team will lose seniors Nate Davis, Nick Fajardo and Ralph Calle-Schulz, but with key contributors returning, including a quarter of starting first years, they will look to build off of this season's momentum and return to the Skyline Conference Tournament in 2026.
