Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's tennis team fell in a closely-contested 3-4 defeat to the Maccabees of Yeshiva on Thursday night. The match marked SLC's 2025 Skyline opener as the Gryphons and Maccabees battled to a 3-3 tie with just first singles remaining.
The Gryphons started the match off by winning the doubles point after a pair of victories.
Neomi Spellman and
Josephine Jackson took a 6-3 win in the first flight while
Margaret Moon and
Colleen Coughlin once again teamed up for a win in the third flight.
Zoe Kovac and
Viha Shah fell 2-6 in the second flight, but the Gryphons had already claimed the point to get ahead in the match.
In singles play, the teams were evenly matched, with flights 2-6 going back-and-forth before first singles eventually decided the match. Kovac rebounded from a doubles loss as she defeated her opponent in the third flight by scores of 6-4, 6-0. Shah also found redemption via a 6-0, 6-4 victory. The Maccabees took straight-set wins in fourth and sixth singles while Jackson lost a three-set battle in the second flight. The match came down to the first singles battle, as Spellman took on YU's Rina Pollack with a conference victory on the line. Spellman took the first win, but Pollack rebounded to force a third set. After a 5-2 lead for Pollack in the deciding set, Spellman rallied to bring about a 5-5 draw, but the host held off the junior and claimed a 7-5 victory to claim the set and the match.

The Gryphons (2-2, Skyline 0-1) will return to action for their third match of the week on Saturday as they travel to take on Brooklyn College for a noon showdown. The Gryphons and Bulldogs will battle in Brooklyn as SLC looks for their third non-conference victory of the young season.
