BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's tennis team fell to the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's Long Island on Saturday despite a thrilling win at third doubles by
Margaret Moon and
Serafina Panuccio. The Gryphons play two nail-biting doubles matchups as both first and third doubles went to tiebreakers.
How it Happened
Doubles play was intense at the top and bottom of the lineup, with first and third doubles going into tiebreakers before naming victors. At the first flight,
Josephine Jackson and
Neomi Spellman played a terrific match against SJLI's top pairing, going back-and-forth before falling 4-7 in the tiebreaker. In the second flight,
Zoe Kovac and
Viha Shah fell 6-0 as the visiting pairing took the victory. The Gryphons then took a closely-contested third set as Moon and Panuccio claimed an 8-6 tiebreaker victory, but the Golden Eagles took the doubles point with wins in the first two flights. In singles play, the visitors dominated with five straight-set victories. The closest battle in singles play was in the third flight as Shah took on SJLI's Amanda Andree. Andree took the first set by a score of 6-4 before Shah battled back with a 6-2 win to tie the set, forcing a decisive third frame. Despite a strong battle, the visitors would emerge with a sweep of singles play thanks to a 6-3 third-set victory.
