How it Happened
The teams battled early, with ties at seven, nine, 10, 11, 12 and 13 points apiece as Cahill and Ethan Look each registered kills. The teams stayed close throughout the set, but the visitors took six of the final seven points to claim an early one-set lead over the Gryphons. The second set was a similar story early, with a pair of Cahill conversions keeping SLC in the set. This time, however, the CCNY run would come early, with an 8-2 run putting the visitors ahead 14-7 and threatening to take a two-set lead. A CCNY error, a pair of Cahill kills and Black's first ace of the evening helped bring the team within two before a dump by Xie, another score from Cahill and two more Beaver errors tied the set at 18 points apiece. The teams traded points, with SLC getting a timely kill from Look, but the Beavers once again closed out the set strongly, taking the final six points for a 25-19 win. In the third set, Sarah Lawrence continued to compete point-for-point early, but CCNY again found separation midway through the set, coupling a pair of aces with two SLC attack errors and holding a 15-8 lead halfway though the frame. The Gryphons continued to fight, with Kairos Diaz and Xie scoring, as well as Black's second ace of the match, but the Beavers would hold on and remain in control through the final rallies, withstanding two late Cahill conversions and returning to NYC with a three-set victory.
