Women's Soccer Rolls Past Maritime, 7-0

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. — The Sarah Lawrence College women's soccer team erupted for six first-half goals and cruised to a 7-0 Skyline Conference victory over Maritime College Saturday, October 3 at Reinhart Field.

The Gryphons improved to 5-1-5 overall and 4-0-1 in Skyline Conference play with the shutout, while Maritime fell to 2-6-1 overall and 1-4-0 in conference action.

Sarah Lawrence wasted little time taking control, scoring three times in the opening 15 minutes. Phoebe Workman opened the scoring in the third minute, finishing a give-and-go from Katey Beaver for her fourth goal of the season.

Beaver then took over, scoring twice in a span of less than six minutes. The sophomore tapped home Workman's feed in the ninth minute before finding the back of the net again in the 15th minute following a pass from Giuliana Sheehan. Beaver's two goals gave her a team-leading seven on the season.

The Gryphons continued their offensive barrage as Emily Barrientos scored in the 21st minute off a steal from a Maritime throw-in. Maria Cortina Fernandez added her first goal of the season less than four minutes later, finishing a left-footed one-timer from just outside the box.

Sarah Lawrence capped the six-goal first half when Zoey Barth scored her first collegiate goal in the 28th minute, taking a low cross from Barrientos and finding the back of the net.

The Gryphons added one more goal in the second half, with Sheehan scoring in the 54th minute after Ena Garza kept the ball alive along the goal line and found Sheehan at the far post.

Sarah Lawrence dominated the match statistically, holding a 27-0 advantage in shots and a 19-0 edge in shots on goal. The Gryphons also controlled the corner-kick battle, 5-1.

In goal, the Gryphons' defensive unit was never seriously threatened as Maritime failed to register a shot. Sarah Lawrence recorded its fifth shutout of the season,third-straight, behind Bella Vaca and Arwen Browne in net.

Beaver led the offensive attack with two goals, while Workman and Sheehan each finished with a goal and an assist. Barrientos, Barth and Cortina Fernandez also found the back of the net in the victory.

The Gryphons continue their Skyline Conference schedule with their next contest on Tuesday, October 6 for their Breast Cancer Awareness Game against Manhattanville at 7:00 p.m. at Fleming Field.
