FLORHAM, N.J. – Junior
Stella Sturgill scored twice, including the equalizer with less than 15 minutes remaining, as the Sarah Lawrence College women's soccer team battled FDU-Florham to a 2-2 draw Saturday evening at Robert T. Shields Field.
The two goals marked the first of Sturgill's collegiate career. The junior paced the Gryphons offensively, recording a game-high six shots, including four on target.
Sarah Lawrence (2-0-1) controlled the offensive opportunities throughout the match, outshooting FDU-Florham (3-0-1) 16-9 and holding a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Gryphons forced eight saves from the Devils' goalkeeper, while junior
Bella Vaca made three saves in goal for SLC.
FDU-Florham opened the scoring in the 21st minute after Vaca made her first save of the night in the eighth minute. The Gryphons responded with pressure, firing four shots over the next 10 minutes.
Sarah Lawrence found the equalizer in the 38th minute when Sturgill finished a pass from junior
Madeline Moor. The assist marked Moor's first of the season and the 13th of her career. The Gryphons continued to pressure the Devils, registering three additional shots before halftime.
After a scoreless opening 20 minutes of the second half, FDU-Florham regained the lead in the 72nd minute. The Gryphons followed with back-to-back shots on target from
Zoey Barth and
Emily Barrientos.
Sturgill also quickly answered, recording another shot on target in the 74th minute, Sturgill found the back of the net in the 76th minute to level the match at 2-2. Barth provided the assist, marking the first of her collegiate career.
The Gryphons recorded two additional shots in the final minutes, while FDU-Florham managed one, but neither side could find the game-winner as the match ended in a draw.
The result marked the first tie in the all-time series between Sarah Lawrence and FDU-Florham.
