JAMAICA, N.Y. — The Sarah Lawrence College men's soccer team earned its first victory of the 2026 season Wednesday, September 2, defeating York College (N.Y.) by a 3-0 score on the road.
With the win, the Gryphons improve to 1-1 on the season and 5-4-1 all-time against the Cardinals. The victory also marked Sarah Lawrence's first win over York since 2018.
Sarah Lawrence controlled much of the contest, finishing with a 17-7 advantage in shots, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. The Gryphons generated 11 of their 17 shots in the second half and also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Gryphons nearly opened the scoring early, as
Henry Seas recorded Sarah Lawrence's first shot of the afternoon in the 15th minute. Two minutes later,
Dylan Peavoy forced the first save of the match from the York goalkeeper.
Sarah Lawrence broke through in the 22nd minute. Freshman
Matthew Donnis sparked the scoring play with a strong run up the field before sending a cross into the box. Seas collected the pass and calmly finished past the York goalkeeper to give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead.
The goal marked Seas' first of the season and the second of his collegiate career, while Donnis picked up his first collegiate assist and first career point.
York created several opportunities late in the opening half, recording five shots over the final 19 minutes, but the Gryphons' defense kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard to carry a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Sarah Lawrence continued to apply pressure throughout the second half before finally adding some insurance in the 87th minute.
Kairos Diaz fired a shot that was initially stopped by the York goalkeeper, but the rebound fell to Bolden near the top right of the box. Bolden quickly gathered the loose ball and placed his shot into the bottom-left corner of the net to extend the Gryphons' lead to 2-0.
Less than a minute later, Diaz added a goal of his own. Collecting the ball outside the box in the 88th minute, Diaz delivered a perfectly placed lob over the York goalkeeper to cap the scoring at 3-0.
The goal was Diaz's first of the season and the second of his collegiate career.
The Gryphons continued to threaten in the closing minutes, nearly adding a fourth goal in the 89th minute before York made its final save. Sarah Lawrence's defense held firm in the final seconds to secure the shutout and the team's first victory of the season.
Joseph Vaca and
Jacob Freed split goalkeeping duties, playing 45 minutes apiece. Vaca recorded one save, while Freed made two saves to combine for the clean sheet.
The Gryphons return to action Saturday, Sept. 5, when they travel to Lehman College for a non-conference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
