YONKERS, N.Y. — The Sarah Lawrence College women's soccer team suffered its first setback of the 2026 season Wednesday, September 23, falling 2-1 to William Paterson University at Fleming Soccer Field.
The Gryphons (2-1-4) took an early lead, but William Paterson (4-3-0) answered with a pair of goals to earn the non-conference victory.
Sarah Lawrence struck first in the eighth minute when senior Stella Sturgill found the back of the net, off a 1v1 with the goalie, for her third goal of the season. The goal came on the Gryphons' first shot of the match and gave SLC a 1-0 advantage.
William Paterson responded in the 18th minute, as Janie Henderson scored off an assist from Maria Funiciello to even the match at 1-1.
The Gryphons held a 6-3 advantage in shots during the opening 45 minutes, and continued after halftime, registering five shots in the first 11 minutes of the second half.
The Pioneers took the lead in the 61st minute when Funiciello converted to make it 2-1.
Sarah Lawrence continued to battle late, holding William Paterson without a shot over the final stretch of the match. The Gryphons recorded eight second-half shots, including five on target, but could not find the equalizer.
Sarah Lawrence finished the night with a 20-4 advantage in shots and a 12-3 edge in shots on goal. The Pioneers also held the advantage in corner kicks, while committing seven fouls compared to two by the Gryphons.
Sturgill paced the Gryphons with a game-high seven shots, including three on target. Katey Beaver added five shots, with three finding the frame. Eight different Gryphons registered at least one shot.
Junior goalkeeper Bella Vaca made one save for Sarah Lawrence.
The Gryphons return to action Saturday, September 23, when they host Purchase College at 6 p.m. The match will serve as Sarah Lawrence's annual Play with Pride game, celebrating and honoring the queer experience in the world of sports.
