Daniel Herbst

Daniel Herbst has been named head coach of the Sarah Lawrence College men's tennis team for the spring 2023 season after being an assistant coach for the school's women's tennis team this past fall. Dan has a wealth of experience as both a tennis coach and professional, including from 2015 to 2021 when he was the Head Women's Tennis Coach at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. During the 2015-16 season his team won 10 matches, setting a school record, and in 2021 Clark defeated Wheaton College for the first time in program history. From 2010 to 2016 Herbst was the Head boy's Varsity Coach at Amherst High School in Massachusetts and in 2012 coached the individual state finalist. He also led the team to the Western Massachusetts playoffs in 6 out of 7 years. During the fall 2010 season, he was also the Assistant Women's Tennis Coach at Smith College in Northampton, Mass.

Dan is a PTR Certified Tennis Professional and is currently a pro at the Hardscrabble Club in Brewster, NY. Dan previously worked as a professional at the Four Season's Racquet Club in Wilton, CT from 2018-2022 and has also been an on-call pro at the Canyon Ranch Resort in Lenox, Mass. since 2015. Prior to that he worked at the Total Tennis resort in Saugerties, N.Y. from 2008-2014.

As a youth, Herbst played tennis and baseball and was a member of the Brandeis University Baseball Team starting in his sophomore year. As an adult, Dan has competed at the USTA 4.0 and 4.5 levels for the past 20 years and has been on several teams that qualified for sectional play. Dan was also notably a member of an 8.0 mixed doubles team which qualified for nationals in 2018. His coaching style is to instill confidence in his players and develop a passion for the sport. He graduated the aforementioned Brandeis University in 1994 and earned a physical education degree from Springfield College in 2007.He also worked as a physical education teacher to students with special needs until 2014.

2023
In his first season with the Gryphons, Herbst helped guide first year Clayton Miller to multiple Skyline rookie of the week awards and an eventual spot on the all-conference second team. Herbst also led the team to a victory against York on April 11th with the Gryphons taking all three doubles matches.

2024
In year two, Herbst commanded the Gryphons to a season-opening 5-4 victory against John Jay at the USTA National Tennis Center. The team defeated another CUNYAC opponent late in the season, taking down Lehman 8-1. In his second year at the helm, Herbst helped Simon Kopecky improve and take the mantle of first singles while playing in many tight match ups.
