PATCHOGUE, N.Y.—Though the Gryphons extended started the weekend with a win, Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball wrapped up a 1-3 showing at the 2012 St. Joseph's College-Long Island Invitational at the Danzi Center on Friday and Saturday.
Sarah Lawrence (10-11) defeated York College to open the event before being hit with losses to Ramapo College, The City College of New York and the host Golden Eagles.
WPI emerged as the tournament victor, as the Engineers were the only team to walk away undefeated in the two-day event.
On Friday, Sarah Lawrence began the day with a 3-0 shutout of York College. After the Gryphons picked up 25-18 opening set, York fought back in the second. Still, Sarah Lawrence survived, 26-24, and clinched the match with a 25-17 third set. The match gave Sarah Lawrence a 2-1 win in the season's three-match series with York and marked the squad's seventh straight victory.
In the evening's nightcap, Ramapo posed too much of a challenge for Sarah Lawrence to handle. The Lady Roadrunners picked up a 3-0 win in the match, 25-12, 25-11, 25-20.
Saturday began with a hard-fought match with CCNY. Sarah Lawrence won the opening set 25-23, but the Beavers took the next three sets, 25-10, 25-21 and 25-21 to earn their first win of the tournament.
SJC dealt the final blow on Saturday, defeating the Gryphons, 25-14, 25-20, 25-23.
Sarah Lawrence returns home to face Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) opponent College of New Rochelle on Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. The Gryphons defeated the Blue Angels once this year and look to preserve their undefeated league record in Tuesday's conference match.
