THROGGS NECK, N.Y.—The Gryphons picked up their second-straight win when Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball defeated Maritime College, 3-0, in a non-conference match at Riesenberg Gym on Wednesday.
Sarah Lawrence (12-11) regains its winning record after defeating Maritime (1-17) for the second time this season.
The Gryphons dominated the opening set of the match 25-4. Senior setter
Brooklynn Moore (Oakland, Calif., Santa Catalina) tallied six service aces on nine serves in the set, breaking open an 8-0 lead. Sarah Lawrence later assembled a ten-point streak and finished on one of the team's 10 kills in the set.
In the second set, first-year player
Zoë Spanbroek (Boca Raton, Fla., Saint Andrew's) landed six kills, while sophomore
Kitty O'Sullivan (Los Angeles, Calif., Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) pitched in with five kills. The Gryphons took an 8-0 advantage to start the set and inflated the margin to 18-6. Maritime kept pace from there but could not fend off a 25-12 win by the Green and White. Junior
Jenai Richards (Kailua, Hawai'i, St. Andrew's Priory) returned from a three-week absence to play most of the set, notching a pair of kills.
Sarah Lawrence trailed momentarily at the start of the third set before the Gryphons took control at 8-1. Maritime rallied back to narrow the gap to 9-8, but a 9-1 run by the visitors put Sarah Lawrence on top 18-9. Spanbroek closed out the day with her match-high eighth service ace, giving Sarah Lawrence a 25-14 set and a 3-0 victory.
O'Sullivan topped all players with 13 kills, while Spanbroek followed with 11. Moore finished with 29 assists to accompany seven service aces. First-year player
Jomana Abdallah (Anaheim, Calif., Fairmont Prep Academy) led the match with 11 digs, while
Sarah Haber (Newtown, Pa./George School) (Newtown, Pa., George School) pitched in with a season-high seven digs.
Sarah Lawrence returns to Noyse Court to host Brooklyn College in a 7 p.m. match on Friday. The Gryphons then head to Bard College for a tri-match with University of Saint Joseph on Satuday.
