Women's Volleyball Defuses Cannoneers

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—The Gryphons tallied their fifth-straight victory as Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball defeated Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) opponent Pratt Institute, 3-0, at Noyes Court on Tuesday evening.

Sarah Lawrence (8-8, 2-0 HVWAC) evens its overall record with its second conference win, while Pratt (0-4, 0-3 HVWAC) remains winless on the year.

The opening set saw Sarah Lawrence take the lead from the first serve of the match. First-year player Zoë Spanbroek (Boca Raton, Fla., Saint Andrew's) landed the first kill of the night and tied for a team-high four kills in the 25-14 set. Sophomore Kitty O'Sullivan (Los Angeles, Calif., Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) equaled the mark, while first-year player Jomana Abdallah (Anaheim, Calif., Fairmont Prep Academy) also picked up four kills.

In the second set, the Gryphons excelled at breaking up the Cannoneers' attack. Sarah Lawrence scored a sideout on eight of nine Pratt serves and steamrolled the visitors, 25-9. O'Sullivan notched seven kills in the set, while Spanbroek picked up five digs defensively.

Pratt created trouble for Sarah Lawrence in the third set. Cannoneer junior Deniz Ozguven (Ankara, Turkey/ASM Madrid) notched her fourth service ace of the match en route to a 7-6 Pratt lead. The Gryphons responded as Spanbroek added another two kills, while sophomore Xina Graham-Vannais (Newtown, Pa., George School) picked up two service aces as part of a 5-0 Sarah Lawrence streak. Spanbroek landed the final kill of the match, and the Gryphons clinched the set, 25-16.

O'Sullivan led all players with 14 kills, while Spanbroek added nine. Setter Brooklynn Moore (Oakland, Calif., Santa Catalina) had 29 assists in the match, and Spanbroek's total of 10 digs was the only one in double digits. Pratt's Ozguven had a match-high four service aces.

Sarah Lawrence is on the road for its next match, when the Gryphons travel to take on Albertus Magnus College on Friday at 7 p.m.
