Fall Special Event Wrapup

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—The Sarah Lawrence College Department of Athletics & Physical Education wrapped up its fall semester of special events with three engaging opportunities for students and community members. Beginning in September, five weeks of intramural basketball were conducted at the Campbell Sports Center. In November, the department's annual Turkey Day bowling event was a success, and basketball's annual Homecoming game rounded out the season of events.

The fall semester's intramural basketball league saw about 30 students compete in 3-on-3 basketball over the first quarter of the academic year. Teams were divided and competed in round-robin ball for slots in the culminating tournament. The tan team of Crystal, Dan, Greg and Jason succeeded in the regular season and carried the top seed into the bracket. The fifth-seeded team of Cecilly, Salim and Zee made a deep run to advance to the championship game, but the tan team triumphed. Intramural participants received colorful T-shirts for their efforts, and good sportsmanship was demonstrated by all.

On November 12, about 15 bowlers traveled to Paradise Lanes in Yonkers for the department's annual Turkey Day bowling shootout. The van of eager participants brought lots of enthusiasm to the lanes, as each player vied for turkey-themed prizes. Aside from T-shirts and giveaways, top honors went to Craig for the day's high game and to Alex who had the highest series among the players. Regardless of skill level, all players enjoyed a Sarah Lawrence tradition that has been held for more than five years.

Friday, November 30, saw Sarah Lawrence basketball take on Pratt Institute in the team's annual Homecoming game. In front of a crowd of more than 300 fans, Sarah Lawrence earned the 35-32 win. In addition to the basketball game, the Students for Students Scholarship Fund (SSSF) Committee and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) organized a barbeque and other fundraising events to support the Sarah Lawrence community. Through concessions and a raffle, the SSSF Committee raised over $400 to support student programming.

A special thank-you goes to the following sponsors for making Homecoming 2012 a success: Mrs. Morgan's Flower Shop, Eco Green Cleaners, Fabio's Hair Studio, Value Drugs, Slave to the Grind, Womrath Bookshop and Bronxville Starbucks.

The Department of Athletics & Physical Education thanks all participants and attendees for making this semester's events a success. Be sure to keep an eye out for future events beginning with the annual Fitness Challenge in January.

Each of the special events was coordinated in part by Evening Program Director and Intramural Sports Director Joe Iannotti. Additional Homecoming coordination was provided by Josh Luce in the Office of Student Affairs.
