BROOKLYN, N.Y.—In day one of competition, Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball fell to host NYU-Poly and to Farmingdale State College by identical 3-0 margins during the Jay Street Challenge at Jacobs Gymnasium on Saturday. Sarah Lawrence slid to 0-4 on the season with the losses, while NYU-Poly (3-9) and Farmingdale (2-3) saw improvement in their ledgers.
In the Gryphons' first match of the day, NYU-Poly put heavy pressure on Sarah Lawrence and pulled away with a 25-8 opening set. The Blue Jays racked up a .462 hitting percentage in the second set and steamrolled to a 25-7 win in that stanza.
The third set saw the Gryphons put together a few runs and hang with the host Blue Jays, but NYU-Poly eventually closed out the match with a 25-21 third set. NYU-Poly totaled an impressive 14 aces compared to the Gryphons' two.
Zoë Spanbroek (Boca Raton, Fla., Saint Andrew's) led Sarah Lawrence with eight digs and four kills, while
Kitty O'Sullivan (Los Angeles, Calif., Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) matched her mark of four kills.
Against Farmingdale, Sarah Lawrence fared better. After the Rams built a seven-point lead to capture the first set at 25-18, the Gryphons kept the second set closer before falling, 21-25. In the third set, the Gryphons tied the set late at 24-24 before Farmingdale State closed the match, 26-24.
Sarah Lawrence is set to play two more matches at the Jay Street Challenge on Sunday. The Gryphons will attempt to avenge Thursday's loss at York in their 10 a.m. match before Sarah Lawrence challenges Montclair State University at 4 p.m.
