Women’s Volleyball Sinks Maritime

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Behind a 13-kill effort by first-year Zoë Spanbroek (Boca Raton, Fla., Saint Andrew's), Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball defeated visiting Maritime College, 3-0, in a non-conference match on Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Tuesday.

For Sarah Lawrence (2-5), the win is the team's first shutout victory of the season, while Maritime (0-8) is still seeking a victory this year.

The opening set quickly played into the Gryphons' hands, as senior setter Brooklynn Moore (Oakland, Calif., Santa Catalina) served three aces in the match's first four points. First-year player Molly Busk (Corbett, Ore., Corbett) added three aces of her own to lift Sarah Lawrence to an 11-3 advantage.

Spanbroek contributed four of her kills in the set and had the honor of serving back-to-back aces to close out a 25-12 set for the Gryphons.

In the second set, the Privateers showed signs of resilience, responding to each Sarah Lawrence attack with kills of their own. The set saw 10 ties and seven lead changes, as the opposing squads teetered back and forth in the lead.

With the set tied 17-17, Spanbroek again took control, scoring four kills in the final nine points of the set to close out a 25-18 stanza for the Gryphons.

In the final set, Spanbroek's deadly serving, including five consecutive service aces, generated eight quick points for Sarah Lawrence. First-year player Jomana Abdallah (Anaheim, Calif., Fairmont Prep Academy) contributed three aces of her own in the middle of the set, and a 19-7 Gryphon lead developed into a 25-10 set to clinch the sweep for Sarah Lawrence.

In addition to her 13 kills, Spanbroek finished with eight aces and four digs. Moore totaled 18 assists and six aces, while Busk topped the team with five digs. As a team, Sarah Lawrence notched a season-low seven attack errors and season-high 23 aces.

On the other side of the net, Maritime's Tessa Jardine (Valley Stream, N.Y./Waterford) had seven kills and five digs, while Jerrica Romero (Bronx, N.Y./Herbert H Lehman) totaled six kills with 13 digs.

Sarah Lawrence returns to its home court on Friday, Sept. 21, as the Gryphons host a doubleheader including a rematch against Lehman College at 6 p.m. and the team's first showdown with Medgar Evers College at 8 p.m.
