Women's Volleyball Drops Pair on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
PURCHASE, N.Y.—Despite more than 50 Gryphon kills over the six sets, Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball suffered a pair of losses at the Valiant Tri-Match, hosted by Manhattanville College on Saturday at Kennedy Gymnasium. Sarah Lawrence (3-8) began the day with a 3-0 shutout at the hands of William Paterson University (10-3) before falling to host Manhattanville (7-9) in straight sets.

In the opening set against William Paterson, the Gryphons notched three kills and a service ace to take an early 4-3 lead, but the Pioneers broke open a 14-9 advantage. First-year player Zoë Spanbroek (Boca Raton, Fla., Saint Andrew's) put Sarah Lawrence back into the mix with three service aces in the set and led all players with five kills, helping the Gryphons force a 15-15 tie. Eventually, William Paterson scored four unanswered points to turn a 21-21 deadlock into a 25-21 Pioneer victory.

The second set played equally back-and-forth, as the lead exchanged hands five times, and the score was tied on 10 occasions. Though the Gryphons matched William Paterson's efforts, Sarah Lawrence never led by more than one point, and the Pioneers took the lead for good with a 7-0 run to turn a 15-14 deficit into a 25-22 win.

William Paterson's Shauna VanDeRee (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) notched six aces in her eight serves of the third set, giving the Pioneers a 14-8 advantage. Sarah Lawrence closed the gap to 15-13, but William Paterson pulled away for a 25-16 set to clinch the 3-0 sweep.

Gryphon Kitty O'Sullivan (Los Angeles, Calif., Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) notched the team's first double-double of the season with her 12 kills and 17 digs in the match. Setter Brooklynn Moore (Oakland, Calif., Santa Catalina) led all players with 26 assists against William Paterson, while Spanbroek finished with 11 kills.

Against Manhattanville, the Gryphons hung in the opening set and led at 5-4 until the Valiants scored seven straight points for an 11-5 edge. Sarah Lawrence managed only four kills and one service ace in the set as Manhattanville cruised to a 25-11 win.

In the second set, Manhattanville led with back-to-back aces and two quick kills to break open a 7-2 lead. Though the Gryphons pulled within two points at 15-13, the Valiants scored five in a row and sealed the set, 25-20.

The Gryphons played stronger and notched 10 of their 19 kills in the third set. Still, an early Valiant lead proved too much to overcome, as Sarah Lawrence never led in the 25-20 set.

Spanbroek led the team with eight kills and 16 digs against Manhattanville, while Moore tallied 16 assists. O'Sullivan had a pair of aces, while sophomore Xina Graham-Vannais (Newtown, Pa., George School) and first-year player Jomana Abdallah (Anaheim, Calif., Fairmont Prep Academy) broke into double digits with 10 digs apiece.

Sarah Lawrence takes a few days off to get set for its next match on Thursday. The Gryphons host Purchase College for a match at 7 p.m. on Sept. 27 on Noyse Court at Campbell Sports Center.
