Women's Swimming Downs Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—
Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming dominated its dual meet, winning nine of 11 events, to defeat Brooklyn College, 140-59, in a non-conference showdown on Saturday.

Sarah Lawrence (7-3) opened the meet with a victory in the 400 yard medley relay. First-year swimmers Ariana Peschke (Topanga, Calif., La Reina) and Sam Amberchan (Menlo Park, Calif., Menlo-Atherton) partnered with sophomores Jay Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J., Mountain Lakes) and Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J., Morristown) to win the event in a time of 4:45.57.

In the next event, Bates captured the win in the 1000 yard freestyle, stopping the clock in 12:32.60 to win by a margin of nearly three minutes. Later in the meet, Bates added her third victory of the day with a swim of 6:05.67 in the 500 yard freestyle.

Pulitano notched his first individual win in the 200 yard freestyle. In the final lap, he turned a 14-second lead into a 26-second rout, posting a final time of 2:18.15. Pulitano's third swim of the day was a victory in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:20.79), where he was followed by Natasha Leonard (Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i, Kealakehe) for a one-two sweep of the race.

Peschke showed off her speed in the 50 yard freestyle. She touched the wall in 27.05 seconds to win the event by more than 3.5 seconds. In her signature event, Peschke won the 100 yard backstroke with a mark of 1:04.79, while Amberchan finished runner-up to earn the Gryphons' other top-two sweep.

Amberchan contributed Sarah Lawrence's final individual win, as she took the top spot in the 100 yard butterfly with her swim of 1:13.81.

The day concluded with Leonard, Addie Sun (Plano, Texas, Plano), Monika Mednick (Menlo Park, Calif., Menlo-Atherton) and Meg Trask (San Jose, Calif., Piedmont Hills) picking up a win in the 400 yard freestyle relay, as the Green and White squad posted a mark of 4:35.33.

For Brooklyn College (6-6), Valentina Monroy (Brooklyn, N.Y., Edward R. Murrow) and Megan Pendergast (Warwick, N.Y., Warwick) earned wins in the 200 yard individual medley and 100 yard freestyle, respectively.

The Gryphon women will swim one final dual meet to conclude the regular season, facing Skidmore College on Saturday, February 2. Sarah Lawrence then heads to the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Swimming Championships on Sunday, Feb. 3 before concluding the year at the 2013 UNYSCSA Championships in Ithaca, N.Y., Feb. 20-23.
