GLEN ISLAND, N.Y.—In the team's final race of the fall semester, Sarah Lawrence College women's crew fielded three boats at the 2013 Fall Metropolitan Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on November 2. The Gryphons posted some of their best finishes in program history, highlighted by a runner-up finish in their Novice 8+ race.
Race conditions were nearly ideal on the Sarah Lawrence home course in the Long Island Sound. Amidst temperatures in the 60's, the teams navigated flat water with only a light breeze to deter them on the 2000 meter course.
In their first race, the Gryphons fielded a boat in Final 1 of the Novice 4+. Though SLC was bettered by NCAA Division I team from Fairfield University and Fordham University, the Green and White boat crossed the line nearly a minute ahead of Iona University and Vassar College to take third place in the flight.
Next, the SLC Varsity 4+ hit the water in a five-way dual in Final 2. Despite a strong race for the boat, the Gryphons were bettered by tough competition from Fordham, Fairfield, Vassar and Iona to finish in fifth-place.
Sarah Lawrence's final boat was its Novice 8+ squad. In Final 2, SLC squared off against Sacred Heart University and Fordham University. The Gryphons fought for the first place until the end, but crossed the line just 5 seconds behind Sacred Heart for second place.
The day concluded one of the most successful fall seasons in program history, and the team showed marked improvement as the season progressed. For the first time in the last three years, the Green and White were able to field an 8+ boat during the fall segment. The Gryphons will return to action in February for the second half of the season.
