Men's Basketball Nipped by NYU-Poly, 76-75

Box Score
BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—After rallying from a 17-point deficit, Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball was edged by NYU-Poly, 76-75, in a non-conference game at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Monday.

In a back-and-forth game, NYU-Poly (1-1) jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but Sarah Lawrence (2-3) equalized the score on five points from Wyatt Rocheleau (San Jose, Calif./Christopher) and a basket by Graham Gilleran (San Francisco, Calif./Archbishop Riordan). After the Fighting Blue Jays scored the next six points, Rocheleau, Graham and Stevan Radosavljevic (Lazarevac, Serbia/Grammar School Lazarevac) again erased the deficit.

SLC took its only lead of the half after a Rocheleau breakaway layup put the Gryphons in front 15-14. NYU-Poly built its largest advantage at 31-22, and at halftime, the visitors led 36-29.

Sarah Lawrence struggled from the field in the first half, hitting 10 of 33 shots (.303) and 2 of 18 (.111) from beyond the arc.

A 6-0 run by NYU-Poly ballooned the lead to 42-29, and after 5.5 minutes of play, the gap had swelled to 17 points at 51-34. The Gryphons whittled away the deficit thanks to a three-pointer by captain Josh Niebloom (Livingston, N.J./Golda Och Academy) and four-point play from rookie Niko Yuvienco (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King).

Trailing by 12 with eight minutes to play, SLC kickstarted a second-half rally on a Rocheleau layup. Yuveinco ran the floor and scored the next four points in the game, while Gilleran and Radosavljevic each tallied four points in 13-0 rally to earn a 68-67 Green and White lead.

Radosavljevic sank back-to-back layups to give the Gryphons their largest lead, 75-72, with 90 seconds to play. Nevertheless, a pair of Fighting Blue Jay free throws and an NYU-Poly layup with eight seconds to go spelled doom for the Gryphons in the 76-75 defeat.

Rocheleau tallied a team-high 17 points, while Gilleran added 14. Yuvienco added 13 points off the bench. Guard Brendan O'Connell (Andover, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) dished out a game-high six assists.
