Men's Basketball Hit with First HVIAC Loss

Box Score
BROOKLYN, N.Y.—Though four Gryphons scored in double-figures, Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball was overcome by St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, 92-75, in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Brooklyn Technical High School on Tuesday.

After both teams entered the game undefeated against HVIAC opponents, Sarah Lawrence (8-12, 3-1 HVIAC) was dealt its first conference loss of the year, while St. Joseph's (14-8, 6-0 HVIAC) clinched the league's regular-season title.

St. Joseph's led wire-to-wire in the game, using a 6-0 run to compile a 25-12 advantage after seven and a half minutes of play. The Gryphons kept the Bears from pulling away, holding the deficit around a dozen. At the end of the half, a three-quarter-court desperation three-pointer by Josh Niebloom (Livingston, N.J./Golda Och Academy) cut the gap to single digits, and SLC trailed 41-32 at the half.

The Bears looked to be in control, amassing a 60-43 edge, but three-straight Gryphon field goals closed the deficit to 60-50 with 12 minutes to play. From there, SLC foul trouble plagued the Green and White, while St. Joseph's converted on 13-of-16 free throws in the half.

Both teams continued to make shots, but seven successful free throws helped the Bears double their lead to 20 points at 76-56. Down the stretch, the Gryphons were unable to stop the St. Joseph's offense, and the horn finally sounded on a 92-75 loss for SLC.

Off the bench, Mat Gerak (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) led the team in scoring for the second time in three games. The rookie totaled 16 points with six rebounds and three assists. Guard Wyatt Rocheleau (San Jose, Calif./Christopher) came up one rebound short of his first double-double, recording 14 points with nine rebounds.

Graham Gilleran (San Francisco, Calif./Archbishop Riordan) also posted 14 points, adding five rebounds and three assists while increasing his conference-leading block total to 42 on the season. Captain Niebloom rounded out the Gryphon foursome in double-figures, making a pair of three-pointers to bolster his 12-point, three-assist performance.

Stevan Radosavljevic (Lazarevac, Serbia/Grammar School Lazarevac), the Gryphons' leading scorer, was held to single digits for the third time in the last five games. Though the rookie only put seven points on the scoreboard, he contributed 13 rebounds on the day.

For St. Joseph's, Michael Megafu led the game with 29 points and rounded out a double-double with 10 boards. David Louison added 21 points and 11 boards, while Vernon Maddox scored 15 and Matt O'Neill totaled 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Sarah Lawrence next returns home to Noyes Court to host 2013 HVIAC Champion Berkeley College (N.Y.). Action tips-off on Thursday at 7 p.m.
